Inflation in Belgium rose from 8.31% to 8.97% in May. This is the highest level since August 1982, when inflation reached 9.02%. This is shown by the figures published by the Belgian Statistical Service Statbel.
The high inflation in May, as in recent months, is largely due to high energy prices. Energy inflation currently stands at 56.80% and contributes 4.80 percentage points to total inflation.
In addition, food inflation has also risen sharply in recent months. Inflation for food is 6.32% this month compared to 5.09% last month. The contribution of food to inflation is currently 1.26 percentage points.
